Students will start with either The Elements of Style, the Little Brown Handbook, or the Interactive Grammar Quizzes site (Web Resource 1 below) in order to distinguish between phrases and clauses. It is not so important in this lesson to discern each type of phrase and clause as it is to show the five punctuation patterns found in the SAT. I will have students utilize the ccc.commnet grammar site in order to distinguish between phrases and clauses as well as practice with these forms. I will have students complete each of the interactive quizzes that relate to phrases/clauses/sentence structure. Then, students will be given an actual SAT/PSAT exam, and they will highlight all the phrases and clauses found in the writing section. Students may work individually or in a group. After students have highlighted their choices, I will show them the correct markings so that they may check their own work. Students will utilize their understanding of phrases and clauses to answer all the SAT/PSAT questions in a passage. Then, students will utilize a Word document to write their own SAT style questions focusing on the punctuation styles necessary to prepare for the SAT. Each student will submit at least one example of each style of question to a Google Docs page. Then, all students will browse the Google Docs page and work the other students example.
